When perimeter screens and hoardings are required
The moment your construction site touches a live footpath, a retail precinct, an occupied building or a pedestrian route, the perimeter becomes part of the WHS pack. Screens and hoardings are what separate the job from the public, visually, physically and legally.
Typical Adelaide jobs where the perimeter matters:
- Commercial builds in the Adelaide CBD, North Adelaide, Norwood, Unley or Burnside
- Retail refurbishment where the shop next door needs to stay trading
- Occupied office towers being re-clad or facade-repaired
- Public works with pedestrian traffic underneath or alongside
- Event and precinct sites where public safety and brand presentation both matter
- Government and institutional works where clean visual delivery is part of the scope
If your job runs past a live footpath, this is the page.
Types of works and which perimeter suits them
Not every perimeter system fits every job. Use this as a first-pass decision matrix, then we tune it on the site visit.
| Type of works | Recommended perimeter | Why |
| Retail refurbishment, occupied tenancies adjacent | Printed shadecloth hoarding on scaffold, or Ply A-Type with printed panels | Doubles as brand-side marketing while shutting the site off; solid panel keeps dust and noise contained |
| Office re-clad or facade repair, multi-storey | Mesh screen engineered onto the scaffold | Lets air move through the scaffold, protects the public from small-object drops, ties into facade access engineering |
| Demolition, strip-out, cutting, grinding, welding | Solid Ply A-Type (no mesh) | Fire and spark exposure requires solid panel |
| Heritage precinct (CBD, North Adelaide, Norwood) | Design-approved hoarding matched to overlay | Heritage referral is required; standard hoarding graphics may be refused; overlay assessment run before design |
| Public precinct with pedestrian throughflow (footpath cannot close) | Public-facing gantry with hoarding sides | Keeps the footpath open and DDA compliant while overhead works continue |
| Mixed job (facade access + demo + printed brand front) | Combination, engineered in one design | Common bundle; single scaffold design covers screening on the facade elevations and printed hoarding on the street-facing perimeter |
If your job is in more than one category, that is normal, most Adelaide CBD refurbs are. The perimeter is designed as one system across the whole site, not as separate line items per elevation.
What Epic delivers

Mesh screens. Perimeter mesh screening in standard colours, engineered onto the scaffold or as a standalone perimeter. Standard for facade access jobs and precinct-facing scaffold in Adelaide’s CBD.
Ply A-Type hoarding. Standard 2.4-metre solid hoarding, painted or plain, used to secure the site perimeter at street level. The default option where the requirement is “shut the public out” rather than “brand the site”. Solid A-Type is also the required perimeter where cutting, grinding, welding or general demolition is happening inside, because mesh will not contain sparks or heavy debris.
Printed shadecloth graphics. Full-colour printed graphics on shadecloth for retail, commercial and public-precinct work where the perimeter is doing double duty as brand presence. Logos, pictures and artwork all suitable for the substrate. Panels can be swapped mid-hire without dismantling the underlying hoarding structure, so a seasonal or campaign refresh does not blow the programme.
Public-facing gantries. Engineered pedestrian pass-through gantries with hoarding sides and shade cloth or solid deck above. DDA-compliant level access under the deck. The right answer where the footpath cannot be closed but the works overhead need protection underneath.

Council permits
Council footpath and perimeter permits are obtained by the client, not by Epic. Epic engineers the perimeter to the design and permit conditions the client’s PM has secured, and coordinates with the head contractor’s traffic management provider on any Traffic Guidance Scheme (TGS) required.
Where the perimeter narrows a footpath below the council threshold, or where cutting, grinding, welding or general demolition sits behind the hoarding, the perimeter design reflects that from the drawing stage.
Why Epic on screens and hoardings
Engineered into the scaffold from day one. On multi-storey jobs the perimeter is not a separate line item, it is part of the scaffold engineering. When we design the scaffold, the screen and hoarding requirements are engineered in, not bolted on afterward.
Adelaide precinct experience. From the CBD to the metropolitan council belt, we know the public-precinct requirements that trip up scaffolders working outside their home market. Adelaide Railway Station on the delivered record.
Certified engineering. All designs certified by DC Engineering (CPEng), Professional Indemnity cover held on the design.
Printed graphics on shadecloth. Logos, pictures and artwork printed on shadecloth for retail, commercial and public-precinct work. Panels can be swapped mid-hire without dismantling the underlying hoarding.
What a screens and hoardings engagement looks like

- Design. Scaffold and perimeter design returned to match the client’s permit conditions.
- Print artwork approval. For printed hoarding, artwork approved through you or your client.
- Mobilisation and install. Perimeter installed to design. Certificate of Compliance issued on completion.
- Monthly inspection. Documented cadence for the duration of hire.
- Dismantle. Coordinated to your programme with the perimeter maintained through dismantle.

Related services
Perimeter is rarely a standalone package. On most Adelaide commercial jobs it comes bundled with:
- Facade Access Scaffolding — perimeter and facade scaffold are engineered as one system on multi-storey re-clads and refurbs. Screening ties into the facade scaffold from day one.
- Rubbish Chutes — the chute discharge zone on a demolition or strip-out needs its own hoarding perimeter around the bin.
